  • Mayor to formally launch building of Phase 2 extension

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson is to formally announce the commencement of building work on the next phase of development at ExCeL London by laying a commemorative foundation stone on 7 October.

ExCeL London recently revealed the plans which will increase its event space by 50 percent and include a 5,000 seated convention centre. An independent study by Grant Thornton showed that the economic impact of ExCeL and its new expansion will bring £1.6 billion to London by 2011.

Already a world class venue & Business Superbrand, hosting some the UK's largest consumer and trade shows, as well as attracting international conventions, corporate clients and sporting events, ExCeL will also play a central role in 2012 hosting seven Olympic and five Para Olympic events.

The event commences at 12.30, and will also be attended by local Newham resident Olympic Gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu. The champagne reception will also include speeches from Boris Johnson and Kevin Murphy, Chief Executive of ExCeL London.
