X-Factor auditions
- Client: Talkback Thames
- Event: 2010 X Factor Auditions
- Visitor: numbers up to 10,000 per day
Talkback Thames required a flexible venue in which to host the 2010 X Factor Auditions. With up to 10,000 people auditioning each day, space was required for queuing and managing the flow of contestants. The production team also required a holding area, with a large numbers of seats, where contestants could wait prior to seeing the judges...
Requirements
The auditions themselves required a separate, private area, with
an auditorium to accommodate the live audience. In addition the
crew required a separate production area, to cater for a team of 50
people. The judges and presenters also needed separate VIP areas
and dressing rooms.
The auditions attract large numbers of people, who travel from all
over the region to attend, so a venue with good transport links was
essential. The X Factor Judges also needed the flexibility to
arrive by helicopter.
For filming purposes, the team required a venue with outside
space, in order to film essential crowd shots for the show.
Event Solutions
ExCeL London's multi-purpose Event Halls provided Talkback
Thames with the ideal blank canvas, on which to build the
auditorium for the live auditions. The halls provided ample space
for the X Factor set and easily accommodated the 2,500 visitors who
came along to watch the auditions.
The X Factor judges and presenters used the venue's North Gallery
Meeting Rooms, as VIP areas and dressing rooms - a major benefit
being that they link seamlessly with the Halls.
ExCeL London's brand new auditorium, which can cater for up to
5,000, was used as a waiting area for contestants, once they
entered the venue. The production team were also able to utilise
ExCeL's East Car park to queue large numbers of people outside -
providing necessary crowd shots for the production.
The venue worked in partnership with the DLR (Docklands Light
Railway) to increase the frequency of trains and make regular
announcements to passengers, so they knew exactly where to
disembark for the auditions. ExCeL's East Car Park also allowed the
Judges to arrive in style and land their helicopter right outside
the venue.
Testimonial
'Having worked with ExCeL London in the past, we knew the venue
was able to offer the space we required. However, the opening of
their new ICC gave us even greater flexibility to accommodate the
10,000 people auditioning each day. We were delighted to be the
very first clients to use the new ICC on the day that it opened.
Once again ExCeL London proved to be the ideal venue for X Factor,
as it offers large amounts of flexible space and great transport
links to move people in and out every day.'
