The European League Against Rheumatism
- Client: The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR)
- Event: The European Congress of Rheumatology
- Visitor: numbers 16,115
In order to stage the largest medical association meeting to be held in the UK, The European League Against Rheumatism required a venue with a significant amount of flexible meetings space and excellent access for both European and international delegates...
Requirements
On behalf of the EULAR steering committee and the British Society for Rheumatology, London & Partners secured around 10,000 hotel rooms for the four-day event. The UK capital's convention bureau also provided city collateral and support with delegate welcome messages and registration, plus assistance in sourcing venues for the congress social programme and travel deals with its partner members.
Event Solution
Bringing this important peripatetic European Congress of Rheumatology to London was four years in the planning. The ICC London ExCeL worked with MCI Geneva, London & Partners and MCI UK to manage the 2011 event, which took place from 25-28 May.
The four-day congress and exhibition brought together leading global experts in the field of rheumatology to share ideas, develop contacts and learn about the latest developments and innovations.
The ICC's auditorium was used for the plenary sessions, whilst the ICC Capital Suite hosted parallel sessions. The venue's multi-purpose event halls were used for the exhibition, delegate catering, poster sessions and larger parallel session.
The congress got underway with a dazzling opening ceremony and welcome reception, which included a British Guards marching band and highlights from London's musical theatre combined with street dancers and 'Great British' food stations.
The opening ceremony and welcome reception was organised by MCI and Sterling Travel (DMC), with entertainment provided by UK agency Private Drama.
A delegate social programme included President Dinners and receptions at venues including the Painted Hall, within the Old Royal Naval College (a UNESCO World Heritage site) in Greenwich.
Results
Many of the 16,000 international delegates were able to take advantage of ExCeL London's proximity to London City Airport. The airport, which is five minutes away from the venue, offers 350 flights a day and provides access from 30 key destinations including Barcelona, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris and Zurich.
According to MCI Geneva Congress Director, Antonio Guadagnoli, EULAR attracted its highest ever number of delegates (an increase from 15,489 in Rome during 2010) and brought in more sponsorship than ever before as well.
"London's atmosphere, historical background and close links with the US market, combined with a high-level of service provided by the venue helped to make the congress our most successful to date," he said.
