The Future
The changing skyline in this world-class city has evolved nowhere more dramatically than London's eastside. The area east of Tower Bridge, London's new population centre, has been transformed over the past ten years with historic buildings juxtaposed with searing skyscrapers, innovative venues, riverside bars and restaurants and new and unusual visitor attractions. This unprecedented growth is set to continue over the coming years with some major new and exciting developments which were explored at an industry forum held at ExCeL London on 6th June. BackCanary WharfCanary Wharf is one of the world's most highly specified urban areas. It is a thriving and vibrant business district, which extends over 97 acres, with a daily working population of 80,000. Already home to 33 office buildings, over 200 shops, bars and restaurants, planning permission has also been granted for a major 280,000 sq metre commercial office and retail development at Riverside South. The scheme boasts two eye-catching office towers and at 220 metres tall, the south tower will be the second tallest in the Canary Wharf Estate, after One Canada Square. The development will also see a dazzling array of shops and restaurants lining the riverside - creating the longest stretch of retail and leisure facilities along the Thames. Over the last 10 years, Canary Wharf has built more new office space in London than any other property group. The latest figures on annual earnings, published by the Office for National Statistics, show that workers in Canary Wharf are now the highest paid in the UK, and have overtaken the City for the first time. Annual salaries for full-time workers in Canary Wharf went up by 19.5%, taking them to an average of £66,300. The national average is £26,989.
BackLondon 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic GamesThe bringing together of London and the Games represents the combination of two of the world's truly iconic brands, set to deliver an exceptionally high quality environment for future business. The Olympic Park lies at the heart of London's plans for the 2012 Games. Just 1.5 miles from ExCeL London, this 500-acre site in Stratford will provide a compact, secure and easily accessible home for the Games. Nine new venues will be situated within easy walking distance of each other. The main 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the Athletics events. Additional venues include the Aquatics Centre, Hockey Centre, Velopark and the Olympic Village. ExCeL London will also host 6 Olympic events and 5 Paralympic sports.
BackThe O2When it reopens its doors in 2007, the O2 (formerly the Dome) is set to become a world-class entertainment destination. The centrepiece is a 23,000-seater arena hosting up to 150 events in its first year. The majority of the events will be concerts, which will be ideally suited for this purpose-built music venue. The rest of the site will comprise a high-tech entertainment district, including a theatre, an ice rink and cinemas. Contingent on the delivery of a regional casino, a 350-room hotel will occupy a site on the Peninsula's northern tip, immediately adjacent to The O2.
BackSilvertown QuaysLocated on the south side of the Royal Victoria Dock, opposite ExCeL London, Silvertown Quays will be one of Europe's largest regeneration schemes - a £1.5 billion development which will create a town centre for the Royal Docks area. In addition to the creation of 5,000 new homes, the development - offering a mix of high quality bars, restaurants and leisure facilities - will provide an ideal location for entertaining. Due to open in 2009, the £80 million world-class aquarium - The Biota! - will attract an estimated million visitors per year. It will be strikingly designed, recreating complete ecosystems with plants, fish and free flying birds. The exhibit areas will represent diverse world habitats - the Amazon, the British Isles, the Indo-Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean.
BackNew HotelsOver half the new hotels that opened in the capital in 2005 are located in London's east side - right on ExCeL London's doorstep. In 2006 two major new Hilton developments will open within close proximity to ExCeL London - one in Canary Wharf (5-star) and another in Tower Bridge (4-star). 2007 will see a 169-room, 4-star Radisson Edwardian open in Providence Wharf, just 5-minutes from ExCeL London. According to Visit London, development continues to move east, and the eastern boroughs are set to become even more popular with developers and operators as we head towards the 2012 Olympic Games. It is forecast that between 2005-2010, 24% of all hotels will be contructed in London's eastside
BackEurostar ConnectionImprovements to the area's transport infrastructure continue at a rapid pace. Already home to Europe's most popular business airport, London City Airport, and most reliable rail network, the DLR, Eurostar connections from mainland Europe are due to commence from Stratford International Station in 2009. This will reduce travel times from Paris to just 2 hours 15 minutes and from Brussels to just 1 hour 53 minutes. The relocation of the Eurostar terminus will be supported by a DLR link from Stratford to ExCeL London.
In the meantime, off-peak frequency
on the DLR will reduce from 7-10 minutes
to just 5 minutes by the end of 2006, whilst
a further line extension to Woolich/North Kent is planned for 2009
